- <p> DIED. Steven Stayner, 24, who as a seven-year-old was
- spirited away by a sexually abusive man who held him captive for
- more than seven years; after a hit-and-run driver collided with
- his motorcycle; near Merced, Calif. On his way home from school
- in 1972, Stayner was grabbed off a Merced street by Kenneth
- Parnell, a hotel clerk who convinced the boy that his parents
- had given him up for adoption. In 1980 Stayner and another
- abducted child, five-year-old Timmy White, escaped; Parnell
- served five years in prison for kidnaping. Stayner's story was
- the subject of the 1989 television film I Know My First Name Is
- Steven.
